FAQs

How fresh is my coffee when it arrives?

Your coffee is roasted to order and shipped within 24 hours of roasting. We never roast in advance or keep inventory sitting on shelves. This means your coffee arrives at peak freshness, typically 2-5 days from roasting depending on your location. For the best flavor experience, we recommend using your coffee within 2-4 weeks of the roast date.

Should I order whole beans or ground coffee?

We recommend ordering whole beans for maximum freshness and flavor, as coffee begins to lose its optimal taste within minutes of grinding. However, we're happy to grind your coffee to order for your preferred brewing method. Just select your grind size at checkout:

  • Whole Bean (recommended)
  • Coarse (French Press, Cold Brew)
  • Medium (Drip, Pour Over)
  • Fine (Espresso, Moka Pot)

What makes your coffee different from grocery store coffee?

Our coffee is specialty-grade (85+ points), single origin, and roasted by SCA-certified professionals. Unlike grocery store coffee that sits on shelves for weeks or months, your coffee is roasted specifically for your order and shipped within 24 hours. We source 100% organic, fair-trade beans with no artificial flavors or additives - just pure, exceptional coffee that showcases each origin's unique characteristics.

Papua New Guinea | Simbai

Papua New Guinea’s mountainous terrain with amazingly fertile volcanic soil is excellent for growing rich, vibrant Arabica coffee but not very good for transporting it. As a result, many remote villages and smallholder coffee farms that make up 85% of PNG’s coffee production are only reachable by foot or light aircraft, which is why air travel is crucial to get things moving.

Simbai Balus Kopi (Simbai Airplane Coffee) comes from the Simbai region, just over the Bismarck Range that borders the Western Highlands Province and Sepik Province. Volcafe PNG, works with over 4,000 farmers in this isolated region across four airstrips to get them the support they need.

All PNG green coffee from Simbai is transported via plane. For Simbai farmers to access the supply chain, they must bring their coffee to an airstrip. It’s not easy – some farmers have a day’s journey from their farm to the airfields. Once the coffee arrives, it’s weighed in parchment, recorded, and stored in Volcafe PNG’s warehouses.
